Fraud is not a victimless crime. People who make false applications for Council Tax discounts, exemptions and Local Council Tax Support are taking money from honest taxpayers.

Basildon Council's role is to try and stop fraud from happening and to catch people who make false claims. To do this, we need your help!

If you suspect someone you know of making a false application please let the Council's Compliance team know by contacting us through the following ways:

  • In writing to: Counter Fraud/Audit, PO Box 4, Basildon, Essex, SS14 1BY.

You can remain completely anonymous if you wish but any details you do provide will remain strictly confidential.

Please give us as much information as possible - the more information you can give, the better we will be able to investigate.

What happens next?

Once a suspected fraud is reported to us, we will use the information you provide as part of a detailed investigation.

We have powers to obtain information from landlords, employers and banks. In addition, we work with other agencies such as the Department for Work and Pension and the police to help us catch fraudsters.

If there is evidence of fraud taking place, we will take the appropriate action, which usually involves prosecution and making sure the full amount of Council Tax is paid back.
