In the news: Platinum Jubilee celebrations in the borough this year

Lots of exciting things will be going on in the borough this year as part of celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Chairman of the Communities and Wellbeing Committee Councillor Terri Sargent said: "The Platinum Jubilee celebrations are nearly here and I can't wait for all the celebrations across the borough. We'll get to see the best of Basildon and be reminded of how great the community spirit can be here."

"Get involved in our Big Lunches and come along to our beacon lighting ceremonies, and don't miss out on all the celebrations."

The first event will be tied to the Queen's Green Canopy, which is a nationwide initiative encouraging residents to plant a tree for the Jubilee. This month the council will be planting five memorial tree circles across each of our five towns, before plaque unveiling ceremonies at each venue during the spring.

A new piece of public art in the form of a bronze relief of HRH The Queen has been commissioned, which will be designed by a borough-based sculptor. It will be on permanent display on the outside of the Basildon Centre with the installing and unveiling in May this year.

On the first of the extended four-day bank holiday Jubilee weekend between Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June, there will beacon lighting ceremonies across our borough's five towns at Gloucester Park in Basildon, Sun Corner in Billericay, Pound Lane in Laindon, Wat Tyler Park in Pitsea, and Wickford Memorial Park in Wickford. The beacons will be lit in evening ceremonies by inspirational residents from each community and we encourage all residents to come along.

On the Sunday, the Big Jubilee Lunch will take place, an event for neighbours and communities to come together for food and fun, which can be anything from a small gathering in a garden, park or driveway, to a larger party with trestle tables down the middle of your street.

Volunteers are wanted for Big Lunches our borough's parks and community spaces as part of events on the day, to host lunches for your friends and family or for the wider local community. For more information about getting involved you can email platinumjubilee@basildon.gov.uk (opens new window).

Our dedicated Jubilee webpage  will be updated regularly with all the goings-on across our borough, including information on how to organise a street party road closure.
