In the news: Basildon Council approves new measures to prevent homelessness

Basildon Council's Cabinet has approved a comprehensive set of proposals aimed at preventing homelessness and reducing reliance on costly temporary accommodation.

At the Cabinet meeting held on 22 May, councillors endorsed a proactive approach to homelessness prevention, which includes targeted support for at-risk households. The measures are designed to decrease the borough's dependence on expensive bed and breakfast placements and private rented properties for emergency housing.

The council has been awarded £1.83 million Homelessness Prevention Grant funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Of this, £495,000 will be allocated to implement a range of specific and targeted early intervention initiatives aimed at supporting residents before they reach crisis point.

Councillor Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council said: "Like many councils across the country, Basildon is facing increasing pressure on housing and homelessness services. We are committed to reducing the amount we spend on temporary accommodation, especially hotels, by focusing on long-term solutions. 

"While we continue to build more council homes, we recognise the importance of tackling the root causes of homelessness. This means working directly with residents to provide early support and practical help to prevent them from losing their homes."

The new support package will include a variety of interventions, such as debt management assistance, financial relief for vulnerable families and increasing access to employment and skills development services.

These measures are part of the council's wider commitment to sustainable housing and community resilience.
