In the news: Basildon Council takes full control of town centre for the first time in its history to drive regeneration
Basildon Council is taking a significant step in the regeneration of Basildon Town Centre by securing control of the Basildon Town Centre Management Company (BTCM) - placing all key town centre assets under council leadership for the very first time.
This move, approved by the Cabinet on 22 May 2025, marks a pivotal moment in the council's ongoing efforts to transform the town centre and enhance its appeal as a vibrant destination for residents, businesses, and visitors.
The transfer of BTCM to the council grants unprecedented control over key assets it has never previously controlled, including car parks, public realm areas, the market, and bus station.
Councillor Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council said: "Taking control of BTCM is a game-changer for Basildon. For the first time ever, the council is in control of every major aspect of our town centre - from the market to the car parks, helping us to deliver real change and reinvest every pound back into our community. This move puts us firmly in the driving seat of regeneration as we bring forward ambitious plans for the future, including the South Essex Arena, high-quality retail, food and beverage offerings, and new residential developments."
Councillor Jessica Power, Cabinet member for Regeneration, Jobs and Skills commented: "With direct control over key assets, we will now have a seamless, strategic approach to regeneration that attracts investment, supports local businesses, creates jobs and vibrant spaces that people truly want to visit. It's bold action for the long-term economic and social benefits that Basildon people deserve."
This decision builds on recent positive momentum in the town centre, including the announcement that two new businesses - Creams Café and The SushiCo - will soon join the thriving East Square development alongside Vue Cinema, Nando's, and Orleto Lounge.
