In the news: Basildon Council launches 'Green Guarantee' to safeguard local green spaces

Basildon Council has officially launched its Green Guarantee - a commitment to protecting the borough's green spaces from future development and ensuring they remain accessible and well-maintained for generations to come.

The Council's Cabinet has approved the scheme, which safeguards a wide range of council-owned green spaces, including local nature reserves, Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), Fields in Trust sites, and village greens. These areas will now receive additional protection against development pressures.

The initiative forms part of Basildon Council's Corporate Plan 2025-2029, which sets out a vision for delivering high quality of life for all residents. Green spaces were highlighted during public consultation as essential amenities - especially valued by older residents for wellbeing, recreation, and social connection.

Councillor Aidan McGurran, Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure, praised the scheme, stating: "The Green Guarantee is a clear commitment to protect and enhance our green spaces across the whole borough. These areas offer vital benefits for individuals and communities - from physical and mental wellbeing, to encouraging social interaction and supporting biodiversity.

"We're investing in the future by ensuring these spaces remain for the present and future generations to enjoy.

"The Green Guarantee is our commitment to protect and enhance designated green spaces across the borough to ensure that the community has access to high quality green spaces now and for generations to come."

Basildon is home to an impressive variety of green areas, including four country parks, ten local nature reserves, four SSSIs, and over 1,300 hectares of open space. Eleven of the borough's countryside sites are part of Natural England's Higher Level Countryside Stewardship Agreement, reflecting their significant ecological value.

As part of strengthening the Green Guarantee, the council will also explore achieving Green Flag Award status for key parks and open spaces. The Green Flag Award is an internationally recognised benchmark for well-managed green spaces, celebrating excellence in environmental management, community involvement, and accessibility.
