In the News: High Sheriff of Essex visits Basildon to inspire young people
Basildon welcomed a distinguished guest this week as the High Sheriff of Essex, Julie Fosh, visited the borough. She was hosted by Leader of the Council, Councillor Gavin Callaghan, and Chief Executive Gary Jones.
Julie Fosh, the 845th person to hold the historic role, has made it a priority during her term to raise the aspirations of young people and support projects that empower and inspire them.
During her visit, the High Sheriff met with the Council's Community Safety Officers to learn about local efforts to reduce risk and promote public safety. She was also briefed on the Council's Early Intervention and Prevention Programme, which works to support at-risk individuals before issues escalate.
Representatives from several local organisations also had the opportunity to share their work with Ms. Fosh. This included The Children's Society's SAFE in Essex initiative, the FLEX Youth & Community Group, and ATF (Active Thrive Flourish), the last two which are part of the Find Your Active Basildon partnership. These groups, in collaboration with the council, deliver a range of positive activities and support services for young people across the borough.
Speaking about her visit, Julie Fosh said:
"My passion continues to be raising the aspirations of young people, recognising the vital importance of positive role models in their lives. During my year as High Sheriff, I will focus on supporting projects that help young people build self-esteem and offer alternatives to harmful or destructive behaviours."
As part of her wider work, Ms. Fosh is also planning an event to raise funds for the High Sheriff's Fund, administered by the Essex Community Foundation. This fund provides annual grants to grassroots initiatives focused on reducing crime, tackling anti-social behaviour, and enhancing community safety.
Supporting public servants and volunteers—especially those working in law enforcement, public safety, and crime prevention—is a core part of the High Sheriff's role, and Ms. Fosh's visit to Basildon demonstrated her ongoing commitment to those principles.
