In the News: Basildon's full fibre coverage surpasses national average

Basildon borough has made impressive strides in its full fibre coverage, increasing from 21.27% in July 2021 to 71.41% in January 2025. This leap has positioned the area above the national average, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the South Essex Councils (SEC) partnership initiative.

The SEC Digital Programme has been instrumental in expanding full fibre coverage, enhancing mobile connectivity, and improving public services, while also increasing digital accessibility across the region.

Basildon has already seen improved public services and made significant cost savings through fibre infrastructure and the benefits of collaborative opportunities.

Cllr Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council and Chair of SEC, commented: "By working together with other local authorities within the South Essex Councils framework, we've been able to achieve remarkable results on various initiatives, with full fibre coverage being one of the key successes.

"Looking ahead, we plan to improve mobile coverage further. SEC will continue to advocate for greater local involvement in broadband and mobile services, helping to enhance mobile coverage and encourage fibre investment, particularly in underserved areas."

Cllr Adele Brown, Cabinet Member for Planning and Infrastructure, stated: "Basildon's public services have significantly improved, and we've seen substantial savings as a result of our fibre rollout and collaborative efforts."

"Once complete, the full fibre network will enable us to proactively use data to enhance services, such as monitoring floods, air quality, and public safety. It will help us make better decisions, save costs, and manage resources more efficiently, ultimately making our community smarter and more responsive."

Cllr Jessica Power, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Skills & Local Economy, added: "Full fibre access is a well-established driver of economic growth. It attracts investment, creates business opportunities, and ensures that everyone has access to digital services."

"We're committed to supporting Basildon's businesses and will work closely with them to foster digital innovation and stimulate economic growth."
