Registering a death

You must register the death in the registration district where it occurred. Essex Registration Service have eight district offices, as well as local offices and outstations where you can register a death.

The registration process is straightforward and only takes about twenty to thirty minutes. Before you attend the Register Office please make sure you have all the information you will need.

Buying a burial plot from Basildon Council

Basildon Council maintains three cemeteries:

  • Pitsea Cemetery
    Church Road
    Pitsea
  • Great Burstead Cemetery
    Church Street
    Billericay
  • Wickford Cemetery
    Park Drive
    Wickford

 The Council offers the following range of burial plots for sale:

  • New grave in the  Lawn Section  for 2 or 3 Interments
  • Cremated Remains half space in which you can have up to 6 Cremated remains (not available at Pitsea  Cemetery)
  • Cremated Remains plot for 2 interments of cremated remains.

Most often when a death occurs, the funeral director will help make the necessary arrangements for buying a burial plot, but some people prefer to make their own arrangements to buy a grave at the time of the funeral.

Burial plots can only be bought after death has occurred. Basildon Borough Council does not allow pre-purchasing of graves.

Length of ownership

The Exclusive right of burial is sold for 100 years, these are known as purchased graves.

When burials can take place

Burials can take place on any weekday, except on bank holidays. Please talk to your funeral director or contact us to discuss any specific requirements.

Cemetery regulations

Terms and conditions allow the owner of the burial plot to construct a full headstone and kerb set after burial has taken place, along with a small 'garden ' area in front of the headstone. All memorials of this type must be built on a concrete base or landing.

What Cemeteries are covered by Basildon Borough Council?
Basildon Borough Council has four cemeteries: Pitsea New Cemetery, Great Burstead Cemetery, Wickford Cemetery, and Pitsea Old (St. Michael on the Mount). Pitsea Old is now closed.

What are the opening times?
All cemeteries have public access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Can I discuss grave options with someone?
The Cemeteries Supervisor and team are available to discuss your options. Call 01268 208130 to arrange an appointment.

Can I arrange an ashes interment independently of an undertakers?
Yes. Please contact the Cemeteries admin team on 01268 208130.

Do graves need to have an owner?
We advise that all purchased graves have an owner. If the owner is deceased, a family member can take over the ownership. To arrange a change in ownership contact 01268 208130.
