In the News: Basildon Council tenant evicted for anti-social behaviour including drug dealing

Basildon Council has successfully obtained an absolute possession order to evict a tenant due to persistent anti-social behaviour, which included excessive noise, the use of foul language, verbal abuse, threatening conduct, drug dealing, and failure to maintain the property as their primary residence.

Council officers, in collaboration with Essex Police, made multiple attempts to assist the tenant by referring them to relevant support services. However, the tenant declined these offers of help.

The disruptive actions of the tenant and their son significantly affected local residents, who reported threats and intimidation. As a result, Basildon County Court granted an absolute possession order on Friday, 16 May, allowing the eviction to proceed.

Cllr Kerry Smith, Cabinet Member for Law, Order & Enforcement, commented: "When individuals are entrusted with a council property, they understand that there are rules and standards of behaviour they must adhere to. Failure to comply can lead to the loss of their tenancy.

"Everyone deserves a safe and secure home, and our properties are intended to provide just that. A council tenancy is a privilege, not a right. When tenants engage in harmful, disrespectful behaviour, we are left with no choice but to act in the best interests of law-abiding residents and ensure that our communities remain safe and peaceful."

The tenant's son was also convicted for his involvement in the supply of Class A and Class B drugs.
