In the News: Council Leader welcomes return of Waterstones after more than a decade away
The Leader of Basildon Council, Councillor Gavin Callaghan, has warmly welcomed the return of Waterstones to Basildon town centre, marking a significant milestone in the regeneration of the borough's high streets.
The much-loved bookseller officially reopened its doors last week in the Eastgate Centre, more than ten years after closing its previous location. The new store offers a wide selection of titles to suit all readers, from children's picture books to the latest fiction and non-fiction bestsellers.
Cllr Callaghan hailed the opening as a strong signal of growing confidence in the town's future:
"Belief is returning to Basildon — you can see it, and you can feel it. The return of a major brand like Waterstones, after more than a decade away, is proof that big businesses have faith in our vision for regeneration.
"We are transforming our town centres with new shops, a new hospital, improved public spaces, cinemas, and more. Waterstones' return is just the beginning — we're expecting more well-known names to follow, bringing new jobs and opportunities for our community."
He added:
"We believe in Basildon's potential, and it's incredibly encouraging to see that belief shared by retailers and investors. Their support is helping us create a thriving, prosperous borough for the future.
"I look forward to welcoming even more high street favourites to our town."
