In the news: Basildon at Christmas event a success

The rain didn't dampen spirits on Saturday when our borough came together for the Basildon at Christmas celebrations.

The grotto in the Eastgate Centre was opened by the Mayor of Basildon at midday, with the grotto in Basildon Market open all day handing out gifts and Christmas cheer.

Free festive mini golf was on offer next door to the Bavarian Market - where Yorkshire pudding wraps, German sausages, and mulled wine were being enjoyed by residents.

A procession took place through the town centre with Creative Basildon and The Handmade Parade, with lanterns, glow sticks, and colourful characters, ending in St Martins Square at the Gateway 97.8 stage.

Performances on the stage took place from 4pm-6pm ending with a ten-second countdown to the fireworks, led by the Mayor of Basildon alongside this season's Towngate Theatre cast of Peter Pan.

The Mayor of Basildon, Councillor Luke Mackenzie, said: "I had a great day across Basildon town centre at this year's Basildon at Christmas event. Seeing everyone celebrating together, in such positive spirits, was really nice to see.

"It was a pleasure to open the grotto in Eastgate, listen to the acts singing away through the rain in St Martins Square, and start the spectacular fireworks display to conclude the day's celebrations.

Thank you to everyone who came along to enjoy the day, and thank you to Basildon based company Ground Control for their sponsoring of our tree in the town centre."

Some of the activities in the town centre were for Saturday only, but the Grotto in Eastgate, and the Bavarian Market in the town square, which includes the various food and drink stands as well as the free crazy golf, will be staying there until Christmas Eve.

The event was a partnership between Basildon Council, The Eastgate Centre, Gateway 97.8, Basildon Town Centre Management (BTCM), and BasildON Creative People and Places.
