In the news: Council awarded costs of £5,000 as Gala Bingo Hall Untidy Land Notice is upheld

Owners of the former Gala Bingo Hall in Pitsea have been instructed to demolish the building after unsuccessfully appealing a S215 Untidy Land Notice.

At a hearing on Monday 28 February at Chelmsford Magistrates Court Basildon Council gave evidence successfully defending the owner's appeal against the notice, with supporting evidence from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and Essex Police.

The appeal against the order Notice was dismissed.  Basildon Council was awarded costs of £5,000 and the landowners instructed to demolish the building, which has been derelict for a number of years, by March 2023.

Should the landowners fail to adhere to the Notice, Basildon Council will consider taking further action for non-compliance of the notice which may include Direct Action to demolish the property and/or prosecution.

Leader of Basildon Council and Chairman of the Enforcement and Public Order Committee Councillor Andrew Baggott said: "For too long now this building has been a blight on the local landscape in Pitsea.

"I am grateful for the perseverance of our officers and the multi-agency partnership working that has gone into getting this result for the people of Pitsea."
