In the news: Stay safe message for borough residents this Christmas

Residents going out this Christmas are being advised to ensure they pre-book taxis and check drivers hold valid licence badges this festive period.

As festivities get into full swing Basildon Council is encouraging residents to take safety measures to ensure a good night ends with a good journey home.

Leader of Basildon Council and Chairman of the Enforcement and Public Order Committee Councillor Andrew Baggott said: "We have more than 300 licensed private hire and hackney carriage vehicles operating in the borough. They all carry photo ID badges so don't be afraid to ask to see it."

Chairman of the Licensing Committee Councillor Danny Lawrence added: "We want everyone to enjoy their Christmas night's out but now more than ever it's vital precautions are taken both for the safety of passengers and driver. Pre-book a private hire vehicle early in the evening and look for the orange and white vehicle colours and roof signs on a Basildon licensed hackney carriage."

Other tips to taxi safety include:
•    Drinking responsibly
•    Look out for Basildon Council door stickers
•    Tell someone that you're heading into a cab and describe it
•    Phone a friend if you are worried for your safety
•    wear a face mask unless exempt
•    Ask how much the journey will cost and make sure you have money in a safe place to pay for your journey home.
