In the news: Basildon town centre early engagement exercise results revealed
The results of an early engagement exercise into the regeneration of Basildon town centre has highlighted that residents want a secure, safe and green place to shop and spend their leisure time.
Earlier this summer Leader of Basildon Council Councillor Andrew Baggott commissioned the early engagement exercise as a way of listening to the thoughts and opinions of those who will be affected the most by future plans.
Chairman of the Regeneration and Economic Development Committee Councillor Tony Hedley said: "We have listened and will continue to give residents the opportunity to give us their opinions so that we can regenerate our town with their views in mind.
"Residents have told us that high rise housing is not what they want for our town centre so we will put in place a new regeneration strategy for the town centre to reflect these views.
"The results speak for themselves. Our residents want a destination of choice as well as a place to come and shop. The results show that our people want to see green, brighter and safer spaces with plenty to see and do as well as a competitive retail offer. We must now look forward to a town centre shaped by those who will live, work and play in it."
Cllr Baggott added: "I think we can all agree that the town centre needs to adapt and move with the times but there are a few key areas like housing that need some further attention. We will look at the results of the early engagement exercise and formally consult to get more detail and listen to those who have put us here."
The exercise received almost 3,000 responses with almost two thirds of those who took part in the exercise saying they would like to see more green and open space in the town centre and that they would visit in the evening if there were restaurants and entertainment on offer.
More than a third indicated that shops are what they like most about the town. Almost two thirds also said they would like to see more businesses open up and for the retail offer to be increased.
