The Leader Basildon Council, Councillor Gavin Callaghan is calling on the head of Essex County Council to hold off deciding on any planning application about waste disposal at Archers Fields in Basildon Borough until the Government's imminent local governance reorganisation happens

Councillor Callaghan has written to the Leader of Essex County Council, Councillor Finch today, saying Basildon's residents have the right to know the identity of any future waste authority before the planning application is decided—an impossibility if the planning decision happens, and local government is reorganised shortly afterwards.

Dear Councillor Finch,

I write in advance of publication of the Government's white paper on devolution in local government to request that you make a public commitment on behalf of Essex County Council to defer the decision on any planning application concerning waste disposal at Archers Fields in Pitsea/Basildon Borough until the outcome of the imminent government's governance reorganisation is known and implemented.

The identity of the waste authority will not be clear until that reorganisation happens and it would not be right to take a decision with such detrimental effects on our local residents before they themselves have the right to have their locally accountable representatives take it.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council.
