The grants were agreed at a meeting of the Housing and Communities Committee on Wednesday 31 July, as part of a wider reallocation of funds to support a number of key projects. These projects were identified by both the Housing and Communities Committee and the Neighbourhood and Public Spaces Committee.
The grants will be used to fund activities at each of the centres, as well as new equipment and support with membership fees and administration.
"These groups are a lifeline to many senior citizens in the borough," said Cllr Kerry Smith, Chairman of the Housing and Communities Committee."They provide opportunities for elderly residents to meet, take part in activities and socialise. It is vital that we continue to support these groups and I am delighted we have been able to recognise the George Hurd, Pitsea and Laindon Activity Centres in one of the first funding decisions of the Housing and Communities Committee this year."
