Unwanted electrical items can be brought to Barleylands Recycling Centre, in Barleylands Road, Billericay, on the weekend of Saturday 5 or Sunday 6 January (between 9am and 4pm).

Every electrical item donated will be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 voucher to spend at Lighthouse Furniture Project, in Brentwood.

Councillor Kevin Blake, Basildon Council's Chairman of the Leisure, Culture and Environment Committee, said: "Since we launched this campaign earlier in the year we have had a fantastic response from the public. This weekend is an opportunity for us to give the scheme a boost and give something back.

"Donating unwanted electrical items will reduce the need and cost of repairable and reusable electrical items needing to be processed for recycling.

"Any items donated that cannot be reused will be recycled. By working with the Lighthouse charity we are minimising this and giving people the opportunity to purchase these items from lighthouse at reasonable prices."

Outlets have been open across the borough since February where people can donate unwanted electrical items for refurbishment and reuse.

Basildon Council, in partnership with Lighthouse Furniture Project, has been collecting unwanted electrical items at its WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) reuse outlet at the recycling centre at Barleylands.

Items eligible for donation include: Mobile phones and chargers, VCRs and Digi boxes, CD players and radios, remote controls and electronic toys, headphones, Hairdryers and hair straighteners, hair trimmers and shavers, power showers and facial saunas, electric toothbrushes, Kettles and coffee machines, irons and toasters.

Larger items such as fridges, freezers, cookers, washing machines dishwashers, microwaves, Hoovers and lawnmowers can also be donated across the weekend.
