We understand the difficulties relatives and friends experience and the amount there is to organise when someone close passes away. However the Council Tax Office should be informed as soon as possible if an adult occupier of a property passes away, in order that we can take appropriate action to ensure their Council Tax liability is stopped and any outstanding matters are addressed to the correct person.

If only one adult will remain in the property following the death of an occupant
If only one adult remains in the property following the death of an occupant then the remaining occupant can apply for Council Tax Single Person Discount, to apply see Council Tax - Single Person Discount .
If two or more adults will remain in the property following the death of an occupant
If two or more adults remain in the property following the death of an occupant the Council Tax liability will immediately be put in the name(s) of the remaining adult occupier(s).
If the property was owned by the deceased and has been left empty
- If the property was jointly owned, the surviving owner will still be liable for Council Tax
- If the property has not been left to a beneficiary and the deceased person was the sole owner, a Class F exemption is granted until the property is re-occupied or probate is granted, for further information and to apply see Council Tax - Exempt Properties
- Following a grant of probate, if the property remains unoccupied and has not been sold or transferred a further 6 months exemption may be granted.
If the property was rented by the deceased and has been left empty
- The Council Tax Office must be informed of the date the tenant passed away and the date their tenancy officially ends
- The Council Tax Office must be informed of the name and address of the landlord(s)
- The property will remain exempt from Council Tax from the date the deceased passed away until the date the tenancy ends.
