Basildon Council adopted the Opportunities for All Scheme (OAS) and Action plan in December 2008.
The OAS is the Council's Single Equality Scheme. It will help to deliver the Council's commitment to fair treatment for all and create opportunities for all sections of the community.
The OAS sets out the council's policies and ambitions on fairness and equal treatment together with an acknowledgement of its legal duties and obligations and how it intended to comply with these.
The OAS has a three-year action plan covering the years 2009 to 2012. It also includes part of 2008.
The OAS commits the council formally to providing quality customer care and fair and equal access to its services for all. It also covers the need for an open approach to workforce development and maintaining fair recruitment, employment and training policies and practices. It contains detailed plans for creating a fairer, more inclusive and cohesive Basildon by 2012.
The council is working hard with its partners to ensure that the district remains a great place to live, work and visit. An important aspect of this is to make sure that everyone's contribution to the success of Basildon is valued, that there is mutual understanding and respect and that all local people live and work together happily.
In adopting Opportunities for All, the council is sending out a strong message that fairness and equal treatment is important to every single person in the district because everyone has a right to fair treatment, equal access to services and to feel part of their community.
