Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit

Council and private tenants, as well as Owner/Occupiers can get help to pay their rent and/or Council Tax bills through the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit schemes.

Housing Benefit is a scheme to help people on a low income to pay their rent.  It is managed and paid for by local councils on behalf of the Government.  You may be entitled to Housing Benefit is you pay rent to one of the following:

  • A private landlord
  • The Council
  • A housing association.

Homeowners will not be entitled to Housing Benefit but may be entitled to Council Tax Benefit.

In addition, Second Adult Rebate is to help people who are responsible for Council Tax even if they are not on a low income themselves but they share their home with one or more adults who are on a low income or certain benefits.
