Artists impression of how the perimeter of Craylands estate could look after planned redevelopment.
The Craylands Estate is located in the South East of the Basildon District.
The estate was built in the 1960's as a medium density estate comprising a mix of four storey maisonette buildings, terraced blocks, shops and community facilities.
It was built on the "Radburn" principles of design that included the separation of pedestrian and vehicle movement, cul-de-sacs, parking courts and alleyways between houses.
To the west of the estate is the unoccupied Fryerns School and school playing fields.
Now almost 40 years old, the Craylands estate has over time developed a reputation for isolation, poor quality housing and inadequate social amenities.
The physical problems have contributed to the general social problems experienced on the Estate.

The Homes and Communities Agency (formerly English Partnerships) are leading the project in partnership with Basildon Council and Swan Housing Association.
The overall scheme will focus on re-modelling the Craylands estate and redeveloping the former Fryerns school land as a new and sustainable neighbourhood that meets the aspirations of the community.
At the core of the Craylands redevelopment project is the need to create a sustainable, thriving and vibrant community where people want to live and become actively involved in the management of their neighbourhood, now and in the future.
The redevelopment will take place in four phases, over approximately 10 years.
