Change the way you give

We are working with homelessness charity St Mungo's to raise awareness about how to help people sleeping rough.

Change the way you give

Basildon Council works with St Mungo's to provide an outreach service to people sleeping rough in the local community. Outreach workers go out and contact people on the streets, talk to them about their situation, their health and other issues, and help them to move off the streets for good.

There has been an increase in people sleeping rough in Basildon Town Centre. This issue is reflected in towns and cities across the country. Official snapshot figures show that 4,134 people were sleeping rough across England in autumn 2016, a 134% increase since 2010.

Why change the way you give?

Giving spare change often doesn't help the underlying causes of homelessness and the council is aiming to encourage people to donate direct to St Mungo's to help fund their work locally. This campaign aims to encourage the community to make a real difference to the lives of people sleeping rough by donating to support this outreach service and help even more people.

How can I support this campaign?

If you are concerned about someone sleeping rough and want to connect them to local services, you can report it via:

  • The national service website: StreetLink
  • The phone, by calling StreetLink on their 24/7 number 0300 500 0914
  • Or even through the StreetLink app, available on both Android and Apple products.

If you ever see a rough sleeper and want to make a report please make note of any details you can, such as their location, buildings nearby, clothes they are wearing etc.

If you would like to donate your spare change, please visit Basildon Council - Change the way you give page on the JustGiving website.
