Councillors voted unanimously to grant the Freedom of the Borough to the Royal Anglian Regiment at an Extraordinary Meeting of Council on 14 April.

A framed scroll was presented by Cllr Mo Larkin, the then Mayor of Basildon, to General Sir John McColl KCB CBE DSO, and Colonel of the Royal Anglian Regiment.

This historic event, held at Basildon Council's offices on Thursday 9 June 2011, was only possible after Basildon was awarded borough status in 2010.

The Royal Anglian Regiment plans to exercise its right to march through the Borough at a later date when commitments allow.
