Advice for Residents - Lightning
Civil Contingencies Act 2004


Do not believe the sayings about lightning it can strike in the same place twice, it doesn’t always strike the highest object, and it always hits the best conductor.

You may find the following useful in keeping you, your family and property safe,

When a storm is forecast.
  • Unplug all non-essential electrical appliances.
  • Shelter.

During the storm.
  • Avoid using the phone as telephone lines can conduct electricity.
  • Avoid using taps and sinks as metal pipes can conduct electricity.
  • If outside avoid water.
  • Avoid activities such as golf, rod fishing or boating on a lake.

After the storm.
  • Avoid downed power lines or broken cables.
