The Business Rate is a national tax on business properties that helps to fund local services.
- The Business Rate is paid into a central government pool which is then spread among all the councils according to the number of people who live in the area.
- Basildon Council has no control over the amount of rates you have to pay.
- Our share of the Business Rate distribution covers around a quarter of the cost of our services. The rest comes from Government grants and Council Tax.
- The Business Rate also helps to pay for services provided by Essex County Council and the Essex Police.
- Enclosed with your bill is a booklet explaining how the money is spent.
Your Business Rate does not pay for the clearing of business waste. To arrange for a collection, please contact our commercial waste section on 01268 294933.
| Who has to pay Business Rate? |
- In most cases the occupier of the property
- The owner or leaseholder of empty properties
| Paying rates to the owner or leaseholder |
If you pay your rent or rates to the owner (or leaseholder), please remember that you are still liable to us for the rates. So if the owner does not pay us we will seek payment from you.
Any private agreement between you and the owner or leaseholder is not binding in rating law. This means you might need to go to the County Court to reclaim the rates from the owner.
Business Rate is calculated by multiplying the rateable value of your property by the multiplier set by the Government. Your rates bill states the total due, when payments should be made and how much they are.
