Community Development Officers

The District Community Development Officers (CDO) offer support and advice to a wide range of community initiatives throughout Basildon, Billericay and Wickford.

The work of the community development officers includes:
  • Helping groups and individual residents to become more active and to participate fully in their community.
  • Helping Ward Councillors to engage and consult with their local communities.
  • Helping to identify the needs of the community and exploring how these can be met
  • Working together with the community, volunteers and other agencies to improve services.
  • Giving advice and guidance or signposting to essential services.
  • Helping groups/ residents to access funding, training and learning in their community.
  • Acting as an advocate for groups.
  • Developing a programme of Citizenship lessons for local schools and promoting democracy.
  • Developing alternative consultation and engagement structures.
  • Working in partnership with the Police to tackle crime and promote community safety.
  • Developing local initiatives and sustainable solutions to local problems.
  • Supporting local Community Forums and the setting up of local parish councils.
  • Providing engaging and diversionary projects for young people.
  • Helping and encouraging young people to reach their full potential.
There are three Community Development Officers working throughout Basildon, Billericay and Wickford.

As part of her work with community groups, local residents...

Heather works closely with Vange Drop-in Youth Centre, a weekly Thursday evening activity developed as a direct result of Heather's consultations amongst young people in the Vange area. (Closed for summer).

Heather is also closely involved with the South Green Thursday Drop-in Youth Centre. (Closed for summer).

Works with George Hurd Centre to locate funding and resources for older persons' drop-in clinic.

Develop across-generation projects throughout the District.

Develop links with local community associations and other organisations who use community facilities.



As part of his work with community groups, local residents and Interlock!...

Grant is the lead officer for the District's Fair Trade Zone.

Grant also helps to implement fun and diversionary youth culture and activities for young people including:
  • The Boom Room gigs & music workshops for young people.
  • The Celebration of Youth Awards
  • Change of Course - Young peoples' mentoring course.
  • Local democracy & politics sessions in schools.
  • Urban Acts Programme.
  • Healthy Eating & 5 a Day sessions.
  • Pimp My Bike - Cycle mechanics sessions.
