Welcome to Basildon District Council
Different Ways to Vote.

You can now choose whether you prefer to vote at a polling station or by post. If you meet certain legal requirements, you can apply for a proxy vote.

1. Polling Station Vote (Traditional - attend your local polling station and vote in person).

Provided you have registered and are eligible to vote at an election, you will receive a Polling Card some weeks before the election.

The Polling Card will give you the date of the election and the address and opening times of your Polling Station.

You have only to turn up at the Polling Station to vote in person.

2. Postal Vote (Absent voting, send your vote by Post)

Provided you have registered and are eligible to vote at an election you can choose to vote by post.

Contact your electoral registration office on 01268 294352 for a Postal or Proxy Voting Application Form.

Alternatively, visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk External Site Icon where you can download a Postal Vote Application Form External Site Icon

  • You can choose to vote by post, if you cannot or do not wish to attend your polling station.
  • Applications can be made for a single election, for a specified period or indefinitely.
  • A postal vote can be sent to your home address or any other address specified by you.
  • Postal votes can be sent overseas, but you need to consider whether there would be time for you to receive and return your ballot paper by polling day.
  • Postal votes are usually despatched about a week before polling day.
  • If you have been sent a postal vote, you cannot vote in person at a polling station.
  • Postal votes can be posted back to the council offices or returned by hand to the council offices or polling station.
  • Postal votes have to be received at the council or polling station by the close of poll on polling day.

3. Voting by Proxy (Appoint someone to vote for you)

Provided you have registered and are eligible to vote at an election you can choose to vote by proxy.
