Welcome to Basildon District Council
Why Vote?

Though it is not compulsory to vote you should realise that voting in elections is the most important way to make your voice heard on the issues that concern you.

Decisions are made on your behalf every day, ranging from what is happening in local schools and what recreational facilities you have, to national issues like healthcare and education, to global issues like defence and the environment.

A strong and stable democracy relies on people using their votes.

By voting, you can hold your elected representatives accountable.

As a citizen of Britain, the Commonwealth or the Irish Republic who is 18 years or over and registered to vote:
  • You can vote at the District & Parish Council Elections, held each year in the month of May.
  • You can vote at the Parliamentary Elections held once every 5 years or as decided by Parliament.
  • You can vote at the European Elections held every five years.

Citizens of other European Union (EU) countries can vote in Local Government and European Parliamentary elections.

You can and should register to vote if:
  • you're eligible to vote but not already registered
  • you have been registered but have changed address
  • you have been registered but your name has changed.

To find out more: see Who can vote? and How to register.

Make sure you have your say, votes are power.
