Basildon District Council has chosen to maintain a joint register of applicants who wish to be considered for social housing within the district. Social Housing is properties made available for rent where the landlord is a Local Housing Authority or a Registered Social Landlord (RSL), including Housing Associations
The Council works in partnership with Registered Social Landlords (RSL’s) to provide housing. RSL’s provide an increasing proportion of new and re-let properties. The Council will nominate applicants to either Council or RSL properties when they become available for letting. Applicants joining the Housing Register are unable to exclude RSL’s as the landlord of the properties they are invited to bid for. Invitations to bid will be sent to all applicants in the appropriate Bands/categories. The RSL tenants are able to apply to the register for a transfer if they meet the criteria.
The Housing Register and this Allocations Policy operates under the provisions of the Housing Act 1996 – Part VI (amended by the Homelessness Act 2002) and the associated Code of Guidance.
The Allocations Scheme is designed to make best use of the housing stock in the district. Applicant’s housing circumstances will be taken into account. Medical conditions, where they are affected by the current housing, will be considered for ‘due preference’ .
