Business Rates are not payable for the first three months that a property is empty.
This is extended to six months in the case of certain industrial properties like factories and warehouses.
After this period business rates are payable in full unless the unoccupied property qualifies for exemption under the Non-Domestic Rating (Unoccupied Property) Regulations 2008 or the empty rate has been remitted or reduced by government order.
Normally the Council's Business Rates section will automatically award the appropriate reduction to the property.
For further information regarding these changes please Download a leaflet - CHANGES TO THE RATES LIABILITY OF EMPTY AND PARTLY OCCUPIED PROPERTIES EFFECTIVE FROM 1 APRIL 2008 , compiled from information provided by the Department of Communites and Local Government .
If you are a registered charity you may be entitled to an 80% reduction in your Business Rate bill.
The charity-commission.gov.uk website gives information on how non-profit making organisations can become a registered charity.
We may also give:
- up to 20% additional discretionary charity relief depending on the type of organisation
- up to 100% discretionary charity relief to other non-profit-making organisations.
Please contact the Business Rates Office for more information and an application form.
